Extremely Unusual “Empress of the Aliens” Barbie

I am pretty shocked at how unusual and “out there” this Barbie is. “Empress of the Aliens” is a 2012 Barbie Collector doll. I’m quite surprised Mattel would allow this (albeit lovely) strange doll to be created. Might it hurt their branding?
She wears a spectacular purple gown with green bodice, heavily slanted eyelashes and makeup, and intricate snake-and-vine shoes. The doll artist is Bill Greening.
She reminds me of a fantastically dressed woman out of Flash Gordon.
