I am a little obsessed with the Summer Olympics games, but when I heard that they were holding them in Tokyo I was immediately excited. I’m sure you could imagine my absolutely glee when Mattel announced that they decided to partner with International Olympics Committee to bring us Tokyo 2020 Olympics games Barbie dolls! Of course, the Summer Olympics have been postponed due to the global health situation.

There have been many occasions where Mattel has created dolls to celebrate Olympic winners. This is the opportunity to celebrate the new sports that will be added to the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo! Take a look at each of these Tokyo 2020 Barbie dolls that represent each new sport.

Softball/baseball will be added again after its removal following the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics. This is most likely because Japan loves baseball. To make clear, Barbie is playing softball, which is technically the “indoor version” of baseball. The baseball/softball controversy aside, I am in love with this doll! The outfit for this Tokyo 2020 Softball Barbie doll is adorable. She’s actually wearing cleats like she would be if she were out in the field. You can pose her with either a glove or a bat. Barbie also comes prepared with a softball.

Sport climbing is genuinely one of the most impressive activities for the new Olympic Games. 2020 Tokyo Olympic Climber Barbie doll is ready to conquer any mountain. She is fitted with a harness and rope to safely start her climb! Her outfit is exceptionally bright, so you can see her while she is scaling the mountain. My only gripe with this Barbie doll, is that she has no muscles! If you’ve seen bouldering or speed climbing, you know it requires an obscene amount of strength.

There’s a very special place in my heart for this Tokyo 2020 Olympic Karate Barbie. This martial art is native to Japan and has been around for a very long time. It will be such a pleasure to see the very best karate athletes in action this year! Barbie does a splendid job empowering women to learn karate or any martial art. She’s wearing traditional garb called a karategi and is a blackbelt! Her pink gloves are a great touch, but most likely won’t be used during the actual games.

The color scheme for the 2020 Tokyo Surfer Barbie doll is amazing! So bright and colorful, perfect for the Summer Olympics. I’m surprised it has taken so long for surfing to be in the lineup for sports offered in the Olympics. I think realistically the surfboard Barbie is using is too small, but it’s still really cute. I love the strap that hangs off it is, just like a real surfboard. Take her with you as you practice your surfing skills!

Tokyo has managed to really appeal to a new generation with a lot of these additions. The 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games skateboarder Barbie doll is evidence of that! Barbie is being extra safe with her wristpads, kneepads and helmet! Who knows what kind of tricks she has up her sleeve while she grinds down pipes or ollies off of curbs. Her outfit is also super adorable. I love the combination of pink and orange! The character printed on her T-shirt looks straight out of Japan, so I appreciate the homage.

Each Barbie is not only unique and honors her sport, they all come with gold medals. That’s something we help our kids aspire to! Collect them all the Tokyo 2020 Barbie dolls for a whole set! Hopefully this is a continuous trend for all Olympic Games as they allow more and more sports to participate!
